The Penelakut Island Thunder took the men’s division of the first Cowichan Football Club Futsal indoor soccer tournament by storm.
The Thunder stormed through seven games undefeated at the Si’em Lelum gymnasium in Duncan to place first among the 10 participating teams with a great display of teamwork.
The Thunder began to roll in the first of four games in the Group B round robin Friday night with an 8-2 victory over Pacific Edge from Duncan.
Through three Saturday games, the Thunder only allowed eight goals which is quite remarkable in indoor soccer.
The first opponent was Young Bucks, a young Cowichan team that filled in for the Songhees First Nation team Cousins that dropped out of the tournament at the last minute, and beat them 9-2.
A team of young talent from west and east Saanich’s Tsartlip and Tsawout First Nations known as Wsanec Colosen was up next and the result was much the same, with the Thunder winning handily 10-2.
In the last game Saturday, the Thunder defeated the Kingcome Inlet/Campbell River First Nations team known as 11 Donkeys, One Goat 8-4.
Sunday’s knockout playoff round began with an 8-2 Thunder victory over Wsanec Whalers of Saanich.
The Thunder kept it going with an 8-4 triumph over the Ladysmith Strikers from the Stz’uminus First Nation in the semifinals.
That just left the final game on the drive for the championship and the Thunder went all the way with a 5-2 win against Cowichan’s Cosmos FC.
The Thunder’s Shane Brown was the top goal-scorer in the tournament with 18. Shane’s dad Patrick Brown and Caden Jack were Thunder all-star selections.
The team travels to Campbell River for another tournament Feb. 17-18.
In the women’s final at the Cowichan FC tournament, the Creatures defeated Cowichan 5-4.
