The pickleball craze is alive and well, but a surprising lack of entries has forced the cancellation of a tournament planned for Fuller Lake Park Sunday.

Vancouver Island Pickleball Association president Ken Holman of Chemainus decided Wednesday to call off the 2022 Skinny Singles Shootout.

“In the 10 years I have been running tournaments this has never happened before,” he indicated. “This same event filled last year and we were anticipating the same for this year. The reason for this lack of support is unclear.”

Holman theorized the singles format might have limited appeal or perhaps there was some tournament fatigue setting in.

“There are a lot more tournaments being offered this year, not just on the Island but throughout B.C.,” he pointed out.

Holman expects it’ll be much different for the VIPA’s 90-minute tournament Aug. 14.

“Last year the mixed doubles event in this tournament filled within four minutes of the registration opening,” he noted.
