Successful Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournaments are becoming a frequent occurrence in Chemainus at the former St. Joseph’s School gymnasium.

The South Island Open Grappling Challenge ran for seven hours April 22, with more than 250 registrations. The all-ages event began with competitors as young as five years old in the morning and finished with adult competitors.

“We are so thrilled with the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community coming together from as far as Kamloops and Powell River to help us make this event a success,” noted Jordan Green, one of the owners of South Island Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Chemainus and SIO Productions operating in Chemainus.

“I believe every academy on Vancouver Island was represented, with lots of smiles, great Jiu-Jitsu and lots of medals awarded.”

Special recognition was given by Green to local sponsors that included: Beyond the Usual, Level Ground Coffee Roasters, Little Town Pizza, Crown Arbor Arborist Services, Central Cowichan Animal Hospital, Arr Kay Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Yeshi Dressing.

The next event, the South Island Open 2, takes place at the St Joseph’s gymnasium on Saturday, July 8.
