‘Take Me Out To The Ball Game…’
It’s been a long time coming, but a typical weekend in July pre-COVID finally happened again when the Crofton Ball Park was the scene Saturday and Sunday for the return of the Crofton Fire Department Charity Slo-Pitch Tournament.
“It was good for teams, playing on that field again,” said Rick Smith, who led the organizing crew from the department for the event again. “That was nice.”
Plenty of enthusiasm was shown over the course of the weekend by members of the 14 participating teams.
The A Division championship game went 12 innings before the Clean-up Crew from Lake Cowichan defeated the Hybrid Hitters 10-9.
“It was a great way to end the weekend,” noted Smith.
Oak & Carriage won the B event and the Marlins took top honours in the C event.
Weather conditions were ideal Saturday but turned to drizzle for the early part of the schedule Sunday.
“They were troopers,” said Smith of the teams involved in game action at that time. “They played through the little bit of rain we had. The last half of the day was sunshine.”
The exact amount raised for the fire department’s charities hasn’t been determined yet, but promises to be a hefty total. Each of the teams paid a $325 entry fee, for starters, and kept the department members staffing the beer garden extremely busy all weekend that added significantly to the proceeds.
