Chemainus product Zach Diewert and his Southeastern University Fire teammates from Lakeland, Florida are National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Association World Series champions.
Diewert, in his final season of college eligibility, played a pivotal role in the outcome during his first starting assignment of the double knockout World Series tournament at Lewiston, Idaho.
Diewert was at the plate in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and no one out Thursday night when the championship game was suspended due to lightning and rain.
When the game resumed Friday morning, Diewert got credited with a crucial RBI that broke the game open and sent Southeastern on the way to an 11-5 victory over host Lewis-Clark State. He reached base on an error and that ignited a six-run rally.
Southeastern went into the tournament as the N0. 1 seed. Despite a 59-4 overall record for the season, the Fire had to battle hard to win each and every game, often coming from behind to do it.
