Nothing like playing one of the best right off the bat.
Chemainus Secondary School’s senior boys volleyball team is still in the midst of getting organized and went into its first game in Duncan last week against the powerful Duncan Christian School Chargers with only six available players. That included one player with absolutely no experience.
“He was one of our six,” said coach Sean Lefebure of Joel Eastwood. “He had to stay on the floor. He was a great sport about it.”
Chemainus and DCS played a lengthy match as time allowed before an exhibition that followed involving some of the DCS grads now at college. DCS swept the series of four sets from Chemainus and the teams went into a fifth before clearing the court for the featured match.
“DCS, they’ve got a great volleyball program - it seems like every year since I was in Grade 12,” noted Lefebure.
At this stage for his players, “they weren’t really a match for them,” he conceded.
But with about nine players on the roster and a little more work, Lefebure hopes to see the team’s skills improve.
Matt Simpson is the key man on the team and Lefebure will be counting on him heavily while juggling the coaching among his part-time work and part-time schooling.
“He’s been great being a leader on the team,” said Lefebure. “It’s a huge help.”
Chemainus and DCS play a rematch in Chemainus Thursday.
