Chemainus Secondary School’s senior girls volleyball team held its own in matches last week.

The Cougars went up against Queen Margaret’s School at QMS in Duncan last Tuesday and lost the first two games 22-25 and 13-25.

“The first game was close,” noted coach Cindy Bowden. “The girls played hard. It could have gone either way. We missed a couple of key serves.”

In the second game, the girls had to fight through some discouragement, Bowden added, and didn’t play as well.

The teams played a third game for fun and Chemainus won.

Highlights included: Andrea Brooks’ serving, with a string of eight in the third game, while Alexis Belton, Akiho Tomida and Peri Pickel displayed consistent passing.

Katie White was the top hitter with eight kills.

“The girls played more aggressive this match than the first one,” Bowden indicated. “This cost us a few points, but rewarded us with many. We are working hard to improve each game we play.”

Thursday’s game was at Cowichan Secondary in Duncan and the Cougars dropped the first two games that counted against Cowichan Secondary 10-25, 7-25, and won the third off-record game 27-25.

“The girls are improving, learning and playing hard,” Bowden praised.

Strong play was shown by setter Brooks, libero (defensive specialist) Pickel and right side hitter Belton.

The team was back at Chemainus Secondary School Tuesday against Duncan Christian School.

The DCS program has been a long-established contender in Island A volleyball. Chemainus faced a tough task against DCS and fell 25-9 in the first game before cutting the deficit to 25-17 in the second game.
