Chemainus Secondary School’s senior girls volleyball team is competing in the Island A girls volleyball championships Friday and Saturday at Duncan Christian School.

The Cougars play Stz’uminus at noon, North Island at 3:45 p.m. and Port Hardy at 7:30 in the first round Friday. The 12-team event concludes Saturday.

The Cougars’ latest tune-up games were against Brentwood B and Brentwood C.

They were defeated in the first game by Brentwood B, but came back to win over Brentwood C.

Maggie Fraser, Hailey Williams and Sydney Lyderik were strong offensive forces. Williams and Lyderik put up blocks while Fraser attacked the ball from the power position.

Sienna Waller set up plays and had Kassidy Rankin’s support defensively digging up balls. Nyah Healey’s serves kept the sets close and Bianca Elias’ serve receive helped set up plays. Nevaeh Macdougall stood tall at the net taking away hitting lanes.

“Both games were played well and it was our most offensively played games so far,” noted coach Kelsey Bell. “The girls’ work on positioning is paying off and we are consistently getting more attacking opportunities.”
