The Chemainus & District Baseball Association season is into full swing again, but one of its longest-standing traditions didn’t happen this year.
The Chris Fenton Memorial Tournament was cancelled on the Mother’s Day weekend due to a lack of teams. Only five had registered and organizers needed eight for it to be a go-ahead.
As much as that was an unfortunate turn of events, the tournament schedule will be busy at the Chemainus Ball Park for the annual HopWo tournament for mosquito teams and an Under 18 event as well June 3-5.
The Chemainus U18s are looking forward to their tournament and have played five games to date with a 1-4 record under the direction of coach Jon Aaron HopWo.
Chemainus beat Duncan Red 11-5 for its lone victory and also lost a 13-12 nail biter in a second game against Duncan Red. The team lost twice to Ladysmith and also against Duncan Blue in its other games.
Chemainus has yet to play Salt Spring Island and Oceanside in the Mid-Island interlock league.
“They’re pretty young,” HopWo said of his team. “They’re mostly all first year. I have a lot of teaching to do.”
The season is extremely busy from now until mid-June with essentially three games every week. That includes a pair of doubleheaders at home for Chemainus on May 15 and 28.
