The Chemainus Brewers improved to 6-4 in the South Island Baseball League for junior men’s teams following a pair of default victories.

Both the Victoria Red Sox and Rockies were short of players for back-to-back games against the Brewers at the Chemainus Ball Park and called Friday to cancel and give up the two points.

The Brewers hosted the Blue Jays and Giants the previous Sunday.

The Blue Jays were also short of personnel for their game with only eight players available.

“We ended up playing the game and gave them one of our guys,” pointed out Brewers’ playing coach Bryan Wheeler.

The Brewers won automatically, but also prevailed in the game anyway 7-0, the exact same result as a default score.

“Ironic how that worked out,” Wheeler quipped.

In the game against the Giants, “it was pretty exciting,” he said.

It went into an extra inning and down to the wire, with the Brewers winning 3-2.

The Giants were up 2-0 before the Brewers got one back in the fifth inning and tied it in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

Manny Rathor doubled in the eighth, went to third on a groundout and scored on a Cam Frame hit to second that resulted in him reaching base safely after the Giants bobbled the ball.

The previous week, also at home against the Victoria Reds, the Brewers lost the first game in the doubleheader but bounced back to take the rematch.

Ethan Whitelaw had five RBIs and a stolen base in the series while supplying some solid pitching. Gryphon Rennie tallied two hits and scored three runs.

The Brewers now play a series of road games and don’t see action at the Chemainus Ball Park again until July 21.
