A small group from Chemainus Secondary School earned some big-time results during the Mid-Island track and field championships at the Cowichan Sportsplex in Duncan.
Kaz Bannister of Thetis Island, a sprint specialist, turned on the afterburners to win the Junior Girls 100 and 200 metre runs.
In the discus, Dominic Hill claimed top spot in the Senior Boys division with a toss of 23.01 metres. Keiran Miller was third in the Junior Boys event (23.45 metres) and Richard Kim fourth (21.97 metres).
The Junior Boys shot put brought a third-place finish for Kim after throwing 9.75 metres. Jace Hamm came sixth, not that far off the leaders at 9.34 metres.
Hill slipped into second place for the Senior Boys shot put at 9.09 metres.
In the Junior Boys long jump, Laine Hogstead waas the runner-up with his 5.32 metre leap.
Qualifiers advanced to the Island high school championships in Victoria Wednesday and Thursday.
