Municipal issues must be first and foremost

Candidates with other aspirations should not be running

Our municipal election will be this Saturday, October 15.

There is a long slate of citizens vying for mayor, council and school board trustees. I think as citizens we need to acquire as much information as possible about the platforms which our potential representatives are espousing.

They may hold strong beliefs on many issues. What is most important is that the issues which the potential representatives have an interest in are of a municipal nature.

Number one responsibility, taken from North Cowichan website is “to consider the well being and interest of the municipality and its community.” I believe this means the concerns of council should be regarding municipal issues which they have direct responsibility for.

This means concern of pandemic response (federal and provincial responsibility), World Economic Forum conspiracies, chem trails … should be left out of the North Cowichan council. Those that wish to make these issues part of council business are wasting not only their time, but council time and in the end we will see a dysfunctional council, wasting our taxpayers dollars.

I think we are all concerned about high property taxes, housing shortage and the like, so we need a council whose concerns are solely municipal. If a candidate is grinding his axe over provincial and federal concerns and responsibilities, he/she should run as an MLA or MP and not waste municipal council’s time and tax dollars.
