Generous community for donations and food pick-ups, too

People pitch in quickly to help gather up rolling oranges

I am a volunteer for the (Cowichan) Neighbourhood House zero food waste program in Chemainus.

The 49th Parallel (Grocery) is a great donater to the program. On Tuesday (June 8), I was picking up food at the 49th and upon entering the parking lot one of the boxes on my cart dumped out and there was dozens of oranges and onions rolling all over the place.

I was shocked that within seconds people came running to my rescue including a toddler holding his dad’s hand and picking up oranges and putting them back into the box. Before I could lift my head up to thank everyone they were gone so I am hoping they are reading this letter to receive the thanks they deserve. What a great community we live in!

In case you want to support the zero food waste program, attend the Neighbourhood House on Willow Street (Chemaius) across from Waterwheel Park on Monday and Wednesday from 12:30 til 2 p.m. and Friday 11:30 a.m. til 1 p,m. to pick up your supply of food and help keep our planet clean.

Thank you again.

Mary Shivel,
