Cops aren’t time machines and don’t grant wishes

Police presence won’t change social issues and today’s different world

I am writing to say that not all who live in Crofton agree with Randy Pauls’ letter (Courier, Dec. 31).

I, too, am an old timer and as a fellow curmudgeon I’d like to say that our community is just fine, thank you very much.

While we are not immune to the challenges that the inequities and social problems of our time create, our peaceful neighbourly village, which is more safe than many, is a comfortable and pleasant place to live.

Mr. Pauls says that he fears he may become a ‘prisoner in his own home’, that more police presence in Crofton will make him feel better about living here.

It seems unlikely to me that it actually would work out the way he hopes. Mr. Pauls’ fears are about social issues, strangers, and the changed world we live in. Cop shops aren’t time machines and they don’t grant wishes. Mr. Pauls might do better to seek counseling for help learning to manage his fears.

Here’s hoping for a happy peaceful new year!

Gary Starkweather,

Crofton
