It’s that time of year when walking through Old Town Chemainus that the striking purple and highly invasive Buddleia or Butterfly Bush is seen lovingly tended in numerous yards.
From Google: “The wild species Buddleia davidii spreads rapidly, invading riverbanks, reforested areas and open fields. It forms thick, shrubby thickets that preclude the development of other native species such as willow.”
The plant can be easily removed by cutting it right to the ground. Be careful not to spread the seeds! The roots are shallow and can be easily dug out with a spade, then pulled.
Happy Summer, and Happy Gardening.
