Jessie Mantle, aged 89, of Victoria, passed away September 2, 2021. The daughter of Frank and Helen Mantle, she was born and grew up in Chemainus. On completing high school, she trained as a nurse at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, graduating in 1950. Later she earned nursing degrees from McGill University and the University of California San Francisco.
She had a long career in nursing education and was one of the pioneers of geriatric nursing and care of the elderly in Canada. After extensive travels and working in England, the U.S. and Eastern Canada, she resettled in Victoria in 1981.
Until her retirement in 1995 she held the dual positions of professor of nursing at the University of Victoria and clinical nurse specialist in elder care at the Juan de Fuca Hospitals.
No service is scheduled at this time. Donations in Jessie Mantle's memory may be made to the University of Victoria for the Jessie Mantle Fellowship in gerontological nursing.
