No joke: more Saltspring ferries started April 1

Following up on their late February announcement, the provincial government has announced a timeline under which BC Ferries will bolster services.

The extra 2,700 round trips — mainly between the Gulf Islands, but on other smaller routes as well — restore the cuts made back in 2014.

Most of the extra sailings were effective as of April 1.

The Crofton-Vesuvius route that connects Vancouver Island to Saltspring Island now has additional trips early on Friday and Saturday which began on April 1.

“Further increases will go into effect on May 1, 2019, as operators that ship dangerous goods adjust their delivery schedules,” said a press release.

The goal, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, is to make it easier for people in coastal communities to get around.

“Adding these additional sailings will be a huge help to people living in coastal communities who rely on ferries for day-to-day travel,” said Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Claire Trevena. “Along with reducing and freezing fares — now in its second year — our government is committed to ensuring ferry service meets the needs of island families up and down the coast.”
