There were many candidates, but this week’s stupidity award goes to the person or persons responsible for shooting off fireworks Sunday night in Chemainus.

Several residents reported seeing and hearing fireworks originating near Carlos Place on Chemainus Road. Not only are personal fireworks illegal, but even considering it with these tinder dry conditions that could easily spark a fire onto neighbouring trees just defies logic.

The loud noise disrupted young children trying to sleep and pets since it occurred after dark.

The incident was reported to police by numerous people, but no officer arrived on the scene within the first hour and a half and the fireworks had long subsided by then anyway.
