Versatile Victoria vocalist Lorraine Nygaard and celebrated pianist Louise Rose deliver soulful interpretations of jazz standards, blues, soul and originals in their first appearance at Pat’s House of Jazz on Sunday, Oct. 21.

Nygaard, whose sultry voice has been compared to those of Nina Simone and Joni Mitchell, will move you with her soulful and spirited interpretations of jazz.

She sang in her early years with a duo in Vancouver and returned to the stage in 2008 after raising her family and studying jazz at the Victoria Conservatory of Music with Gord Clements, Gergana Velinova and Rose.

“Rose has been my mentor in warm and wonderful ways for several years now,” said Nygaard.

In addition to being a caring mentor, Rose is well-known in Victoria as a versatile pianist, vocalist, recording artist, composer, motivational speaker, choral conductor, accompanist, teacher and facilitator.

Rose, who studied with Oscar Peterson, Duke Ellington and Leonard Bernstein, also conducts the 200-voice Victoria Good News Choir. She believes music is much more than a vocation: “It is the perfect metaphor for life itself.”

They will be joined by Michigan-raised bassist Louis Rudner, a recent arrival to Victoria, and Nanaimo drummer Hans Verhoeven.

The show is part of a regular Sunday afternoon jazz series, presented by the Chemainus Valley Cultural Arts Society.

It runs weekly from 2 p.m. in the Osborne Bay Pub, 1534 Joan Ave. in Crofton. Admission is $15.

Reservations are recommended. Tables will be held until 1:30 p.m.
