It’s a battle of the horns as tenor saxophonist Iain Duncan and trumpeter Bryn Badel take on Dr. Tony Genge’s Hammond B3 organ in a blistering show at Pat’s House of Jazz at the Osborne Bay Pub on April 1.

Powerhouse drummer Jon Miller rounds out the quartet, which brings back the funky grooves of ’60s organ soul jazz and hard bop.

All are consummate professionals. Duncan, who plays regularly with Genge at the O Bistro jazz series in Victoria, has also appeared at Hermann’s Jazz Club, the Northern Quarter and the Victoria Jazz Festival. He studied music at Vancouver’s Capilano College, UBC and the University of Victoria.

Badel is a versatile musician who performs with symphonies and jazz ensembles including Lust Life Jazz Band — which was at the Crofton pub last weekend — the Big Band Trio, Vancouver Island Symphony, the Victoria Symphony, The Swiftsure Big Band and Kumbia, among many others.

Genge, a composer and arranger with a doctorate from State University of New York, has performed and recorded with leading Canadian and international jazz artists, including Joe Coughlin and Paul Horn. He is home in Victoria on sabbatical as a professor of music at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, N.S.

Miller studied at McGill University. He performs with his own quartet and with saxophonist Monik Nordine. He has also shared the stage with Jeff Healey, Charlie Hunter and Hugh Fraser.

The show is one of a Sunday afternoon jazz series presented by Chemainus Valley Cultural Arts Society.

It runs every Sunday from 2 p.m. at Pat’s House of Jazz in the Osborne Bay Pub, 1534 Joan Ave. in Crofton. Admission is $15.

Reservations are recommended. Tables will be held until 1:30 p.m.
