The seeds of time produced some big-time results.

In June, Saltair Association for Local Teamwork handed out Halloween pumpkin seeds to children in Saltair, encouraging them to learn how to grow produce and then to also bring the fruits of their labour to the Saltair Halloween event.

With children under 12 unvaccinated, SALT decided not to hold its traditional Halloween event in Centennial Park but organized a small Halloween pumpkin weigh-in at the Saltair Coffee Shack on Halloween morning.

Kids arrived in costumes with their pumpkins. Along with their parents, they also received some hot chocolate and treats like pumpkin and blueberry scones.

A generous donation by Sara Stayte resulted in gift certificates from the Ladysmith Healthcare Thrift Store being awarded to the winners. First prize of a $15 gift certificate for the largest pumpkin was won by Cova and Heaton Paydli. Jesse McConnell took second prize of a $10 gift certificate.

SALT expressed its appreciation to everyone who attended and to the Saltair Coffee Shack for hosting the community event and producing delicious treats.

SALT looks forward to sponsoring the pumpkin growing contest again next year and hopefully under less restrictive COVID protocols.
