Flags are flying at half staff at buildings across the country, including the Chemainus Valley, in tribute to Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen died on Thursday at the age of 96 and after 70 years on the throne.

The majority of people alive today have not known any other monarch in that position, but Elizabeth’s son Charles has now taken over the reins as King Charles III.

Flags will remain at half staff for many days, as part of the ceremonial aspect of the Queen’s funeral procession.

Royal Canadian Legions across the country will be holding memorial services for the Queen next Monday on Sept. 19.
