The feral cats around the community are grateful.
Kathi Diewert’s sale of paintings to raise money for CATastrophe fetched $600 to help ensure members of a feral cat community near Chemainus are fed, especially at this time of the year when the weather is more often miserable than not.
JoHannah Knight bought all three of the paintings, part of Diewert’s costume series from 2019, “tied in with my show I had at the theatre the fall right before COVID,” Diewert explained.
She originally did a series of four acrylic on canvas paintings that were displayed in the Chemainus Theatre Gallery gift shop. “They’re all past shows of the theatre,” Diewert explained at the time.
The paintings depict costumes from the musical productions of Twist & Shout, Footloose, All Shook Up and The Sound of Music. She’s happy to have the proceeds going to CATastrophe and the organization is obviously thrilled.
“CATastrophe is especially grateful to Kathi Diewert for such a generous donation,” offered Heather Andrews on behalf of the organization.
“The donation will buy many bags of dry food. Since COVID, CATastrophe hasn’t been able to do any hot dog sales which brings in most of our money to buy food. The community continues to be extremely generous dropping off the purple bag of dry cat food from Costco at Riot (Brewing) and Doc the Barber and donations through etransfer at chemainuscatastrophe@gmail.com. Many thanks for supporting our cause. Your donations make a difference in the life of a feral cat.”
Diewert’s expertise is not only in painting, but also photography. She currently has an art show at the Cowichan Bay Maritime Museum, open Wednesday through Sunday until 5 p.m.
“I have nine pieces up there running all through December,” Diewert said. “It’s such a cool building. I’m trying to put together a meet the artist.”
