There’s still life in those old rails

Train rumbles by old Nanaimo railway station every day

To those who might have thought the Vancouver Island Railway is completely dormant, here’s a bit of news.

Had lunch the other day at the Black Rabbit Kitchen, located in the old Nanaimo railway station on Shelby Street in Nanaimo. Partway through our meal, we were startled to hear a whistle and felt the rumble of an approaching train.

Moments later, two diesel engines and four big tank cars rolled slowly by. According to our server, the train runs every day.

There’s life in those old rails yet. Who knew?
