Kerry Park team champions of Ethan Stone memorial hockey tournament

Shut out over Campbell River in the gold medal game

Kerry Park shut out Campbell River 5-0 to win the Ethan Stone Memorial Under 13 rec hockey tournament at Fuller Lake Arena.

The tournament took place over two days, Jan. 4 and 5.

Kerry Park C1 topped the Pool A standings in the eight-team event while Campbell River C1 placed first in Pool B that set up the championship game Friday.

The two second-place teams met to decide the bronze medal and Juan de Fuca C4 from Pool A won in resounding fashion over Cowichan Valley C1 from Pool B 12-1. That left Cowichan C1 to settle for fourth place overall.

The playoff between the two third-place division finishers was won by Comox C3 over Vancouver C1 10-3. Comox took fifth spot and Vancouver sixth.

Victoria earned a 7-4 victory over Cowichan Valley C2 to determine seventh and eighth places, respectively.

“I feel it went well and we received lots of positive feedback from the teams attending,” noted tournament coordinator Russ Hepburn.

Ethan Stone’s family was in attendance for the gold medal game, with his sister presenting the trophy to the Kerry Park team.

Hepburn added many people contributed to making the tournament a success. He cited Breanne Heslop, Cowichan C2’s manager, in particular, for putting a lot of time and effort into the tournament.

“Parents from both teams also put in a lot of time running the timing, scoring, 50/50 and raffles,” Hepburn indicated.

The 50/50 draws and raffles held during the tournament raised more than $2,000.
