Joy of hockey evident in Under 8 jamboree

The skills of kids at this age group quite remarkable

The joy of hockey could readily be seen throughout the two-day Under 8 hockey jamboree at Fuller Lake Arena.

The enthusiasm and the skill of the players at this age group is remarkable, as the series of games Dec. 29 and 30 attested.

Five teams participated, including: the host Cowichan Valley Capitals, Lake Cowichan Lakers, Kerry Park Islanders, Nanaimo Avalanche and Nanaimo Sharks.

“The tournament went great and all of the kids had lots of fun,” noted Ken Barnhouse, a Cowichan Valley assistant coach, team manager and tournament coordinator. Mike Cheema is the head coach of the Cowichan Valley team.

“There was a lot of great plays made over the two days,” added Barnhouse.

Parent volunteers helped make the event a success. Funds from a raffle and 50/50 draws raised money for the Cowichan Valley team.

Each team was split into two to play on a half-ice rink, with two games between the same opponents going on simultaneously.

Needless to say, it was action-packed with twice the fun and excitement.
