Seven of the Cowichan Valley’s most talented senior high school basketball players strutted their stuff at the Spectrum Secondary school gym on April 6 during the 35th annual Vancouver Island Seniors Classic all-star games — B.C.’s longest-running high-school all-star event.

The event featured two boys’ games and one girls’ game — all with teams made up of graduating players from the Greater Victoria area pitted against the top athletes from north of the Malahat as voted on by the Island’s basketball coaches.

“This year’s games were competitive and they drew a full-house crowd,” said Brett Westcott, the event’s principal organizer. “This event gives Vancouver Island’s graduating high-school player an opportunity to finish their high-school basketball careers on a high note and add to their list of high-school memories. We have run this event for 35 years and it is always well-received and we look forward to the next high school season when it starts in November.”

The North Island Boys ‘A’ roster included Cowichan Secondary’s Reid Rowan and Brentwood College School’s Milan Pasquale. Rowan netted eight in the team’s 83-74 loss to the South Island Boys ‘A’ squad while Pasquale scored two.

The North Island Boys ‘B’ side, which included Brentwood’s Taylor Edwards and Bern Mebane, fell to their South Island counterparts by a 99-59 score. Edwards scored 11 points and Mebane pitched in with 10.

The North Island Girls team lost to the South Island Girls by a 71-52 score. The team included Cowichan Secondary’s Ellie Irvine, Duncan Christian’s Sydney Dollman, and Shawnigan Lake School’s Kate Rowsthorn.

Dollman was the team’s leading scorer with 11 points. Rowsthorn accounted for eight of the team’s total points while Irvine scored one point on a free throw.
