The Chemainus Cougars junior boys basketball team got into the win column during its second game of the season by defeating Gulf Islands Secondary last Thursday on Salt Spring Island.

The Cougars led all the way en route to a 50-33 victory.

The margin was 12-7 after the first quarter and 24-18 at halftime before being extended to 40-24 after three quarters.

“The guys did a good job of keeping their foot down and closing things out with an 8-0 run early in the fourth and 6-0 run to end the game,” noted coach Casey Parsons.

The Cougars were unable to do that in their first game of the season when they couldn’t hold a 27-19 lead after three quarters and lost 39-34 to Shawnigan Lake School. Lesson learned.

The team’s big man Braydon Screaton had a big game, scoring 16 points and grabbing loads of rebounds at both ends of the court.

Conner Kerr added eight points and Kai Kasting had seven. Jordan Allinott and Tyson Elliot played with great energy on defence, Parsons pointed out, mixing it up and causing several turnovers.

“All 13 guys got floor time,” added Parsons.

The team closes out its pre-Christmas schedule with a game at Quamichan in Duncan Thursday.
