Latin-American musical repertoire showcased by pianist

Chemainus Classical Concerts Jan. 21 performer now calls Cowichan Valley home

Chemainus Classical Concerts starts the new year with a recital, Piano de Colores, by pianist Angélica López-Arzate.

The concert takes place on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. at St. Michael’s Church in Chemainus to avoid a conflict with the Cowichan Symphony Society’s concert on Jan. 14.

Born in the United States, López-Arzate started her piano studies at the age of 11 in Mexico City. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Music with honours from Mexico’s National University and her Masters degree in Music from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

“Her repertoire includes classical, contemporary and Latin American music as well as her own compositions and musical arrangements,” explained Rykie Avenant, artistic co-director for Chemainus Classical Concerts. “As a soloist, she has performed in different venues in Mexico, Cuba, Bolivia, United States and Canada.”

She naturally demonstrates a deep understanding of Latin-American rhythm, colour, texture and interpretation.

López-Arzate will play a program that features Liszt and Chopin, alongside music by Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, Spaniard Isaac Albéniz, Cuban Ernesto Lecuona and others. She warmly invites her audience to explore international horizons with her through the music of those artists.

López-Arzate now lives and works in the Cowichan Valley.

Tickets can be reserved by calling Eleanor Montour at 250-748-8383. Pre-paid reserved tickets are $23.

Tckets at the door are $30. Under 18 admission is $10.
