Staff at CDH great, even if the building isn’t

Within those walls lies a jewel

I spent two days in the Cowichan District Hospital and I think it’s important that people know exactly what goes on in that facility.

The building is old and outdated. There is no way that the architects, engineers and builders had any idea how a medical facility would run 55 years on, so it’s crowded, the passages are jammed with computer equipment and it’s just plain run down.

But, within those walls there lies a jewel, and that is the staff.

I was booked in with a smile and efficacy, attended in pre-op by three lovely nurses, transported to theatre by a competent driver, amazing theatre staff let by Dr. N. Levy, three excellent recovery nurses and finally transferred to a ward.

My stay on the third floor could not have been better. I was attended by dozens of nurses, carers, cleaners and food delivery people. I feel it’s important to mention a few, because they were spectacular, Kera, Mustapha, Jordon, Susan and Maria my physiotherapist. Their attention to me and my issues were first class and much appreciated. And finally I’d like to mention my roomies, Cindy, Donna and Eve, who made my two-night stay memorable.

I have heard the rumour that 50 per cent of the nurses in this facility come from agencies and all I can say to these people is thank you.

To the Cowichan District Hospital, my thanks and gratitude.

Susan Lumholst-Smith,
