The kids are more than alright.

The spotlight was reserved for the 4-17-year-olds Saturday, March 11 for a youth only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament at the former St. Joseph’s School gymnasium in Chemainus.

The South Island Open Junior Championship tournament featured 191 participants from Chemainus, Cowichan Valley, Nanaimo, Courtenay, Campbell River, Power River, Victoria and Salt Spring Island.

“We are so proud of all of the young athletes that competed, many of whom were competing in their first tournament,” noted Jordan Green, one of the owners of South Island Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Chemainus as well as SIO Productions in Chemainus. “We estimate we had over 450 people visiting to watch throughout the day, making it our most successful event yet.”

Sponsors for the event included: Beyond the Usual, Little Town Pizza, Crown Arbor Ltd., Level Ground Trading, Arr Kay BJJ, Get in the Loop Cowichan Valley and Central Cowichan Animal Hospital.

The next tournament in Chemainus is April 22nd.

South Island Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Chemainus’ regular classes for all ages are on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The first week is always free, Green pointed out.
