It was a different kind of season for Fuller Lake Skating Club members, but at least they were able to keep skating.
The club normally has a big awards gathering in Ladysmith, but was unable to do that this year. Instead, they managed to present awards on the ice to a long list of deserving skaters and volunteers.
There were no competitions this season, but separate virtual events within each of the club’s divisions were held, according to club president Luisa Shillingford. Skaters were videotaped and the tapes were sent to Skate Canada for judging.
It started with the senior powerskating group on Monday, March 22. Pre-power and junior power skated on Thursday, March 25 and the juniors, intermediate, senior figure skating, pre-junior, pre-can and Canskate were all on Friday, March 26.
“And they’re still skating for spring ice in Cowichan Lake,” Shillingford added.
Under the special awards category, the dancer of the year honour went to Leah Brown, the gold feet skills to Brooklyn Puska and Lucy Street, program assistant of the year to Daisy McNamara and Aran Mills, and volunteer of the year to Cassandra Taylor.
Top fundraisers for the club were: 1. Daisy McNamara, 2. Sophie Dawe, 3. Brooklyn Puska, 4. Carter Pearson and 5. Gavin Plester.
