It’s game time for the South Island Knights.
The West Coast Senior Hockey League AA men’s team, based at Fuller Lake Arena, opens its season with a pair of games against the North Island Capitals Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m.
“We’ll have pretty close to a full squad,” said Knights’ spokesman and defenceman Jon Hollett of Chemainus, who was still waiting for a few last-minute confirmations from players.
The Knights played an entertaining brand of hockey during their inaugural season last year that reminded fans of the Chemainus Blues’ heyday when the arena was packed for games most nights.
The team is hoping fans will come out and check out the action this weekend. The Knights feature players from around the South Island region from Victoria to Nanaimo.
The players, “a good portion of them,” according to Hollett, are doing double duty in the Mill Bay Rec Hockey and raring to go with the Knights.
The team plays just four doubleheader weekends at home all season and four more on the road.
Admission to the games is $7, with children 12 and under getting in free.
A program with lineups and the schedule will be available at the games. “We’re working on that right now,” said Hollett.
The Knights are still looking for people interested in serving on the board of directors. Hollett and his wife Sarah are doing most of that work on their own right now.
