The Chemainus Cougars returned to the court after the holiday break to face Quamichan in junior boys basketball action at Chemainus Secondary School last Thursday.

The Cougars remained winless following a 50-23 setback against Quamichan, but are slowly gaining experience and more confidence with each game.

“They were a much bigger, more experienced team, but I thought it was probably our best game in terms of playing with fight and not backing down,” noted Cougars’ coach Casey Parsons.

Chemainus got off to a slow start and fell behind 20-8 after the first quarter, but rebounded with a much stronger second quarter and held Quamichan to just eight points. The Cougars added just six points to their total, however, and went into the half trailing 28-14.

“Unfortunately, in the second half, collectively we weren’t able to secure enough rebounds, and gave Quamichan too many second and third chance opportunities in the paint,” Parsons pointed out. “However, even when the game seemed out of reach, the guys played hard and as a team.”

Titus Kennedy led the way for Chemainus with 15 points and was a beast on both the defensive and offensive glass, according to Parsons. Jesse George chipped in with a couple of nice jump shots for four points and Cyler Wilson added three.

The Cougars are back in action Thursday at Duncan Christian School.
