Knock your socks off with two baseball tournaments

Chemainus hosting U11 and U18 teams in weekend action

It’s a doubleheader of epic proportions to double your baseball pleasure.

The Chemainus & District Baseball Association is hosting two separate tournaments on the upcoming weekend, June 3-5, at the Chemainus Ball Park.

The Larry Hopwo U11 mosquito tournament has a long-standing tradition and features 12 teams playing on three fields. Host Chemainus doesn’t have a team in the event, but there’s plenty of interest from outside the area with eight Duncan teams and two each from Ladysmith and Salt Spring Island.

The schedule for Friday, June 3 is as follows: Duncan Blue Jays vs. Duncan A’s, Duncan Giants vs. Salt Spring Harvey, Salt Spring Little vs. Duncan Rockies, 4 p.m.; Ladysmith Red Socks vs. Duncan Pirates, Duncan Red Sox vs. Duncan Dodgers, Duncan Cardinals vs. Ladysmith Mari-Sox, 6:30 p.m.

Games on Saturday, June 4 include: Duncan Blue Jays vs. Duncan Rockies, Duncan A’s vs. Salt Spring Harvey, Duncan Giants vs. Salt Spring Little, 9 a.m.; Ladysmith Red Socks vs. Duncan Dodgers, Duncan Red Sox vs. Duncan Cardinals, Duncan Pirates vs. Ladysmith Mari-Sox, 11:30 a.m.; Salt Spring Harvey vs. Duncan Blue Jays, Duncan A’s vs. Salt Spring Little, Duncan Rockies vs. Duncan Giants, 2 p.m.; Ladysmith Mari-Sox vs. Ladysmith Red Socks, Duncan Dodgers vs. Duncan Cardinals, Duncan Pirates vs. Duncan Red Sox, 4:30 p.m.

Tournament action on Sunday, June 5 features: Duncan Cardinals vs. Duncan Giants, Ladysmith Mari-Sox vs. Duncan A’s, Duncan Dodgers vs. Duncan Blue Jays, 9 a.m.; Duncan Rockies vs. Duncan Pirates, Salt Spring Little vs. Duncan Red Sox, Salt Spring Harvey vs. Ladysmith Red Socks, 11:30 a.m.; first vs. second and third vs. fourth at 2 p.m.

The U18 midget tournament features six teams, with games at the Larry Irving Field in Chemainus and some in Ladysmith.

On Friday, June 3, the host Chemainus Cubs take on Oceanside at 6 p.m. in Chemainus while Ladysmith meets Duncan in Ladysmith.

The schedule for Saturday, June 4 in Chemainus is as follows: Duncan vs. Powell River, 8:30 a.m.; Chemainus vs. Powell River, 11 a.m.; Triangle vs. Oceanside, 1:30 p.m.; Chemainus vs. Triangle, 4 p.m.; and Ladysmith vs. Powell River, 6:30 p.m.

Ladysmith games on Saturday, June 4 are: Ladysmith vs. Triangle at 9 a.m. and Oceanside vs. Duncan at 6 p.m.

The finals are on Sunday, June 5 in Chemainus. The second and third-place teams square off at 10 a.m., first plays fourth at 12:30 p.m. and the two winners advance to the championship game at 3 p.m.

There’s a pancake breakfast both Saturday and Sunday from 7-11 a.m. Pancakes, eggs, sausage and beverage are $5.
