The progression for skaters within the Fuller Lake Skating Club is like the circle of life.
The older skaters eventually move on while younger ones come into the club to start their exciting journey through the ranks.
That fact stood out for Fuller Lake coach Dominic Turgeon as he led the group into the Vancouver Island Interclub competition at Kerry Park Recreation Centre Nov. 18-20.
“I think the real story here is more about the cycle of skaters through the sport in our little club,” he confided.
Long-time skater Sophie Dawe was the first to leave last year while Lucy Street and Isabel Anderson are in their final seasons before graduation and their energies will be taken up by other life pursuits.
At the same time, Turgeon pointed out the newcomers in the Star 1 group like Quinn Montgomery, Caitlin Varcoe, Isla Fink and Chloe Wilson are just getting started.
“It’s a great circle to be a part of,” noted Turgeon.
Results from the Island Interclub included an artistic gold for Anderson. She was also seventh in the Star 7 short program.
Street skated to second place in Star 8 and sixth in the Star 9 short program.
Star 5 had Leah Brown placing sixth and Amanda Nagy 11th.
The Star 4 level featured Hannah Wilson earning second spot for a silver medal.
Tea Searle also achieved silver in Star 2.
Among the Star 1 Fuller Lake participants, Varcoe and Montgomery were both gold recipients. Ella Donovan, Fink, Ella Stuart and Chloe Wilson all earned silver.
The skaters will continue to practice and work hard toward the big event in the new year, the Vancouver Island Regionals in Nanaimo Feb. 3-5, 2023.
