The aim of switching the men’s amateur tournament from September to June was to shed a different light on the Mount Brenton Golf Course.
With the fabulous weather Saturday and Sunday plus the immaculate condition of the course, the plan couldn’t have gone any better.
“We want to showcase the course more in June than in the fall, like September,” said Mount Brenton Golf Course head pro Jan Best.
There’s always a few conflicts on the golf calendar, but the first week of June seemed like a good fit and 82 players took part for the first men’s amateur at the course since before COVID in September of 2019.
“The weather was perfect, the course is in great shape and the greens were true,” noted Kevin Mills, the club captain whose duties include helping with the men’s amateur and club championship to come next month on July 15-16.
“We’re thankful it wasn’t June-uary,” he added, as was the case last year.
Mills was quick to deflect any credit for how smoothly things ran to the culmination of the pro shop, greens crew and Canteen On The Green staff pulling together.
He especially cited the expertise of Ken Norman and Jody Griffiths as instrumental in making sure every little detail was addressed.
“Without these guys and their 25 years experience, it would have been just another game of golf,” added Mills. “They organized all the sponsors, rounded up the volunteers and provided direction on how to run the tournament.
“They are the ones that are the drivers behind this.”
Numerous sponsors ensured there was a large selection from the prize table for the players. No one won the car for a hole-in-one, but it’s always something players shoot for to try and beat the long odds.
Best had predicted a winning score of four- or five-under par based on the conditions and he was close to the mark.
Wyatt Brook of Fairwinds topped the field with a low gross 139 after rounds of 72 and 67 to finish three-under-par.
Brook had a comfortable five-shot margin over runner-up Greg Koster of Sunnydale, who shot 72 both days.
Kris Dunn of Cottonwood claimed his first-ever low net title after rounds of 72 and 74 for a 146 gross and a 144 net for the one-handicapper.
Barry Casparie was the top low gross player from Mount Brenton, shooting 75 both days for a 150. Ed Mulrooney won low net for regular members at 147 and Rob Wallace for intermediate members at 146.
Rounding out the top 10 in low gross behind Brook and Koster were: Tylei Van Anrooy (Sunnydale) 72-73-145; Dunn (Cottonwood) 72-74-146; Robbie Dimond (Morningstar) 71-75-146; Andy Roberts (Fairwinds) 69-77-146; Phil Kondrak (Gorge Vale) 73-73-146; Casparie (Mount Brenton) 75-75-150; Aaron Keller (Mount Brenton) 78-72-150; and Lawrence Willis (Comox) 79-73-152.
Some of the top players in low gross also figured prominently in low net. Two back of Dunn were: Wallace 89-85 (14)-146; Dimond 71-75 (0)-146; Kevin Kosick (BC Players) 78-76 (4)-146; and Casparie 75-75 (2)-146.
