Duncan Christian School girls second at basketball championships

Third medal in three years for Chargers

The host Duncan Christian School Chargers senior girls basketball team earned silver at the B.C. Christian Sr. Girls Div 2 Basketball Championship Jan. 17-18.

"We are very proud of our Chargers," said Tom Veenstra, DCS athletic director.

The team advanced to the final of the seven-team event — their third final in as many years —  by besting White Rock Christian School 49-33.

En route to a tournament first-team all-star selection, Violette Muller led the way with 12 points, eight steals, and 20 rebounds, while Sarah Monahan scored nine points and six steals. Merika Henry was the Player of the Game with eight points and seven steals. Adessa Fitzpatrick and Addie Nederlof both pitched in with six points each.

The two-time defending champions, the Chargers kept pace with the Cedars Eagles in the final game. The Eagles are the No. 5-ranked '1A' school in the province but the host team went into the third quarter with a one-point lead over their competition. The Eagles' high second-half shooting percentage ended up being the difference, however.

Out-scored 22-3 in the third quarter, the Chargers weren't able to mount a big enough comeback, and ended up falling 52-36 to earn silver. Even so, it was the team's third medal in as many years.

Sarah Monahan's 16 points in the final earned her Player of the Game honours for DCS. Sofie Scholefield also played well with six points and 12 rebounds. Scholefield was named a tournament second-team all-star.
