Cowichan wrestlers shine at Western Canada Age Class Tournament

Cowichan wrestlers eighth of 40 at Westerns

The Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club sent 28 athletes to compete at the annual Western Canada Age Class Wrestling Championships at the Richmond Oval Jan.10-12.

This prestigious event brought together more than 450 wrestlers from across the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan to wrestle in categories ranging from elementary to U23.

As has become custom, Cowichan several delivered standout performances resulting in some wrestlers earning spots on the podium. Leading the way was Forrest Boyland, who claimed gold in his weight and age class/

"Forrest showcased exceptional heart and determination in every match," noted Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club head coach Nick Zuback.

The club's silver medallists included Mariam Olson, Anthony Grobbelaar, Antonio Iannidinardo, Wish Kierstead, Tate Marston, Levi Boyland, Skylar Bilot, Lyla Boyland, and Elyssa Olson. Zuback said they all demonstrated skill and resilience en route to their second-place finishes.

Bronze medals were secured by Lennox Boyland, Athena Scott, Kate Grobbelaar, Finn MacMillan, and Ross Meiner, each having to show grit to get to the podium.

Other notable top-six finishes were achieved by Jordanna Crawford-Starter (fourth), and Amelia Korchinski (fourth), Andrew Grobbelaar (fifth), and Rheo Loiselle (fifth).
"As a team, was secured an impressive eighth place out of 40 participating clubs," caid the coach, who noted congratulations are also in order for Charlie Roberts, who received an award recognizing his dedication as an official.

Looking ahead, Cowichan wrestlers will compete at the Campbell River Invitational, followed by the Port Alberni Invitational.
