A slow start proved costly for the Chemainus Cougars in their latest junior boys B basketball league game against Queen Margaret’s School in Duncan last Thursday.

The Cougars trailed 28-10 after the first half, but then regrouped and played quite well. QMS held just a 28-27 advantage in the second half en route to its 56-37 win.

“We struggled to keep the ball in front of us and gave up way too many defensive rebounds that led to easy second chance opportunities,” noted Chemainus coach Casey Parsons. “We had a lot of good mid-range looks, but struggled to knock many down.”

Cyler Wilson bailed out the offense with a couple of big three-pointers when the team was having difficulties getting shots to fall.

“In the second half, we played with a little more fight, secured some rebounds and started to move the ball against their 2-3 zone,” Parsons indicated.

Titus Kennedy was big on the boards for the Cougars and cleaned things up under the hoop while scoring 15 points. Wilson finished with 10 points and Jordan Allinott had four.

All 12 players got on the floor and worked hard until the final buzzer, Parsons added.

The Cougars return to action in the new year against Quamichan on Thursday, Jan. 12 at Chemainus Secondary School.
