The host Chemainus Cubs didn’t get the results they were seeking in their own Chemainus & District Baseball Association U18 tournament, but held their own particularly well in one of their three games.

The Cubs had every opportunity to defeat the Duncan Braves Saturday afternoon at the Chemainus Ball Park’s Larry Irving Field in an eventual 7-5 loss. They had runners on second and third in the sixth inning, but couldn’t cash in. It turned out to be the final inning of the game on a time limit.

“If not for mental errors, we would have scored another three,” pointed out Chemainus coach Jonaaron HopWo. “It was a good battle.”

Shammie Mahon pitched well for Chemainus in relief.

“That was probably his best game ever,” pointed out HopWo. “He came in during the third with two guys on and shut them down.”

The Braves went on to qualify for the championship game, but were overpowered by the Ladysmith Dodgers 17-5. Robert Christenson was the MVP for Ladysmith in the semifinal and Matt Thomson the MVP for the final.

Brayden Ganter earned MVP semifinal honours for Duncan and Anthony Wilson in the final.

Chemainus lost its first game 14-2 to Victoria Triangle Friday night and was also blanked 7-0 by Oceanside Saturday.

The Cubs’ tournament MVP was RBI leader Braedyn Billwiller. The unsung hero award went to catcher Seth Williams, who didn’t strike out the entire tournament.

Josh White of Chemainus batted a perfect 1.000 while playing all three games.

HopWo noted the first 2022 CDBA U18 districts wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Victoria Mahon, Glen Williams, Mike Rochon and Shawn Freer.
