Chemainus Brewers are still running into cancellations that have plagued the team in the early part of their South Island Baseball League regular season schedule.

The Brewers junior men had two doubleheaders scheduled at the Chemainus Ball Park last weekend, but only one of them got played Saturday against the Layritz Rockies.

The Brewers lost the first game 7-3 and the second game finished in a rare 4-4 baseball tie.

The Brewers had a great chance to win the second game in the bottom of the seventh inning with a runner on third base, one out and reliable hitter Bryan Wheeler at the plate. He hit it to second base and Gryphon Rennie was off from third for home on the crack of the bat, but got caught in a rundown.

While that was happening, Wheeler ran to second base. Rennie was eventually tagged out and Wheeler got caught being too aggressive, as the catcher threw the ball to second to catch him trying to dive head first back to second.

That ended the game.

Adam Fukakusa pitched three innings in the first game to start, and Zach Komst came on in relief.

The Rockies took the lead in the first couple of innings with a hot start and the Brewers’ bats didn’t show up until midway through the first game.

Cuban pitcher Jose Cespedes went the distance on the mound in the second game.

Three other Cubans were slotted into the lineup, giving them four among the 10-man starting roster for that game. Randy Camaraza was the designated hitter and Fukakusa only played in the field that game.

The Rockies had a 4-2 lead before the Brewers tied it in the sixth.

For the series, Cam Frame went three-for-seven at the plate with a walk, two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base; Wheeler was two-for-seven with a walk, RBI, run and a stolen base; Komst had a hit for two RBIs and a stolen base; and Camaraza was two-for-five with a walk, RBI, one run and a stolen base.

Next games for the Brewers are Saturday, June 22 at the Chemainus Ball Park at noon and 3 p.m. against the Red Sox.
