The way the weather has been, the new senior men’s baseball team in Chemainus could just as easily be starting the season rather than ending it.
But the Stuart Channel Blue Heron have just been grateful to be on the field for their inaugural season and are looking forward to building on it for next season.
“We’re improving every game,” said team member and spokesman Heath Fenton.
The Blue Heron got a late start to playing games, but it was just as well since the weather didn’t exactly cooperate much for baseball until the middle of July.
A scheduled game against Port Alberni Aug. 20 at the Chemainus Ball Park was cancelled, but the players took advantage of the field time anyway.
“We had an intersquad game that was really fun,” said Fenton.
The team faced Comox Valley Aug. 27 at the Chemainus Ball Park and “they kind of spanked us a bit,” noted Fenton.
Comox scored five times in the first inning and went on to an 11-4 victory.
“We played pretty good, just the one bad inning,” said Fenton.
Comox has a long-established program for men’s baseball of more than 30 years while the Blue Heron are obviously just starting out.
Another intersquad game is planned for Sept. 10 and then the Blue Heron go to Victoria the following week to face the Monarchs. They also hope to line up one final game against the Monarchs in Chemainus Sept. 24 before putting the bats and gloves away for the season.
