Kaz Bannister led the way for Chemainus Secondary School students competing in the Vancouver Island High School track and field meet in Port Alberni.

Bannister won the Junior women’s 100 metres and achieved a personal best time in both the heats and final. She also placed fifth overall in the 200 metres with a personal best time.

Bannister advances to the provincial championships in Langley May 31-June 2 in both events, with the top five qualifying. The results are great since she’s in Grade 9 and running against athletes in both Grades 9 and 10 this year.

Other Chemainus students who competed in the Island meet included: Laine Hogstead, Jace Hamm, Alexis MacLeod, Richard Kim, Kieran Miller, Alex Loewe and Jaymi Wallace.

During the preceding Mid-Island meet at the Cowichan Sportsplex in Duncan, Bannister won both the 100 and 200 metres for Junior girls.

In the Senior girls events, Wallace won the discus and placed second in shot put while Hannah DuMez took first for the javelin and third for the discus.

Loewe claimed third place in the Senior boys 200 metres, with William Ngenda finishing second in the 3,000.

Grade 8 girls competition featured a third for MacLeod in long jump.

The three Grade 8 boys did well for Chemainus.

Hogstead earned first in the 3,000, second in the long jump and third in the 100; Kim came first in the discus and shot put and placed third in the javelin; and Hamm secured third for the shot put and discus.
