Tom Andrews was elected president and Mike Dungey vice president at a special meeting of the Mount Brenton Golf Course board on June 1.

“I’m looking forward to working with the board and the members to keep the golf course an affordable top destination on Vancouver Island for residents and visitors,” Andrews indicated. “There will be a renewed focus on a junior golf program and planning for the club’s 75th anniversary coming up in 2023.”

In his role, Andrews appoints standing and ad hoc committees, and supervises office staff and committee chairs. Golf operations, human resources and league planning come under Dungey’s jurisdiction.

The club’s annual general meeting was held the previous week at Chemainus Secondary School, with 60 members in attendance. The AGM approved the members on the board, and then the new board met to vote in the president and vice president.

New board members elected were: Kirk Bellamy (finance and grounds and greens); Sandra Godkin (food and beverage services and league planning); Al Robinson (membership); Gregory Brennan (finance and strategic planning); and Steve Smith (projects and building management). They were welcomed and thanked for volunteering and taking on their various portfolios.

Bruce Dussault (grounds and greens, strategic planning and finance); Leigh Bennett (projects and building management) and Peter Collum (communications, marketing, league planning and 75th anniversary committee) round out the board.

The board thanked outgoing board members – president Dr. Chris Fritsch, Donna Kendal, Len Shaw and Rich Redfern – for their time and dedication to keeping Mount Brenton a beautiful facility for members and the public to enjoy year-round.

The financial results for 2020 and 2021 were presented by the MNP accounting firm and accepted. The club is in a sound financial position following two years of COVID restrictions. Golf was one of the few activities that increased in popularity due to it being an outdoor sport that people could enjoy while respecting physical distancing.

The club’s Five-Year Strategic Plan was presented and approved by members. Major projects planned include: replacing the irrigation system, upgrading the septic system and renovating the clubhouse.
