Merry Christmas to young and old. (Photo submitted)

What is happening to our beloved Christmas?

Trying not to offend minority groups or naysayers going too far

What is happening here in the Cowichan Valley and possibly across Canada and the world?

Are we now subject to December’s Winter Performance? Holiday pageant? Hip Hop for winter play? In all my years going to my children’s Christmas play, it was called Christmas play or Pageant! I guess School District 79 has voted to take Christmas out of our schools now to not offend minority groups or whomever squeaks the loudest.

When I went to the Winter Play last week to see my grandchildren perform, I was shocked to not hear a single Jingle Bell or We wish you a Merry Christmas. Only Beyonce and Mamas and the Papas. What’s next, no Christmas shopping? Holiday shopping is the new appropriate term?

Let’s not let our educators take away our history of enjoying children believing in Santa Claus, or the wonder of an angel put atop a Christmas tree. I cannot stand by and let a minority of people change history that I cherished as a kid and taught my children to cherish and now I must work harder to teach my grandchildren about Christmas!

My Christmas cards say both Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, as I respect choice! However, our children in school today have not been given that choice. It’s written off due to political correctness and fear of insulting cultural diversity.

I say yes to respecting all cultures but when you take away that choice from our children in school, you take away freedom of choice. No praying in school, no Christmas Pageants, no choice! Where this is going does not sit well with me.

Let’s keep Christmas alive folks. Teach your children respect and teach them that choosing what to believe in is worth fighting for! Teach them that adults are not always right and that they should always have choices! Write SD 79 and ask them why our children were not given a choice this year. I am!

Merry Christmas everyone and may God bless us all!
