Kudos to all the wonderful volunteers for making the Cowichan 2018 B.C. Summer Games such a great success.

This was a huge undertaking given the magnitude of the region and events being held from Ladysmith in the north to Mill Bay in the south to Lake Cowichan in the west and even one event in Nanaimo, with Chemainus included to host wrestling and box lacrosse.

The actual competitions aside, it’s an enormous job just to make sure the athletes are transported to their events and accommodations and to arrange delivery of their meals. The transportation and food components for those few short days require the utmost in organization.

Then there’s the medical people who were stationed at each venue in the event of injuries or treatment. That takes a certain expertise and people possessing those qualities certainly stepped forward.

The medal ceremonies and the general protocol for the Games aren’t things that can just be thrown together and every attention to detail went into those areas as well.

The sports themselves ran like clockwork.

It seems we actually had more volunteers than needed for some duties. That’s a great sign how people were willing to offer their services to ensure everything ran smoothly.

The athletes will surely be taking home some very fond memories of this experience in our area, not to mention the parents, other family members and friends who attended and saw how the Cowichan Valley bands together and goes above and beyond the call of duty to make their stay special.

Our facilities and the hospitality of the Warm Land certainly stand up there at the top of the podium with any other host community in the province.
