Re: A landslide designation could be hazardous for homeowners (Courier, Sept. 8)

Cliff Bridges’ letter appears to sensationalize a draft bylaw designed to help protect the Saltair coastline. A glaring inaccuracy is his contention Area G director Lynne Smith is championing the draft bylaw.

Director Smith has not spoken for or against the draft bylaw. Moreover, she has persuaded the Cowichan Valley Regional District to delay debate to allow more time for public input and to change the name of the Development Permit Area from the overreaching title, Landslide Hazard, to Slope Stability. She is reviewing all the comments and ensuring they are considered.

The stability of our coastal slopes has been a concern for a very long time. Small landslides are common. Clearly, the Stantec-Palmer report defines a general setback area requiring site-specific investigations before they are developed. I and many of my neighbours are glad the report focuses attention on our unique geology, the effects of climate change and the need for proper drainage and safe development.
