Size of the signs isn’t everything; slates for city council wrong

Please take time to read this my fellow Duncanites.

I would call your attention to Mr. Bruce’s council responsibilities compared to the other council members. Please look up the following link and review page 2 of the City of Duncan 2017 Annual Report — https://duncan.ca/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/City-of-Duncan-2017-Annual-Report.pdf. That page shows the various responsibilities that the current council members have taken on responsibility for. It makes me wonder if there is a wasted council seat, because during Roger’s term as a councillor it seems like the only real zeal he showed was in his misguided attempt to try to get us to abandon our self-government and to be swallowed completely by North Cowichan.

His group, that he championed, may well have been the major cause of the waste of taxpayers’ money associated with the referendum. His group has been working on amalgamation for years, and the original referendum question to the voters in 2014 was likely put forward by Martin Barker before he lost his seat on council. Now after doing very little on council, Roger is running again and attempting to flood the council with a slate of his liking.

By removing all earnest productive debate in having a Republican-like majority they could just rubber stamp each other’s pet projects, while we the taxpayers will only be able to sit back and gasp. Slates in our city council are wrong and nasty. From the actions I have been made aware of Bruce’s slate is — Martin Barker for mayor, Roger Bruce, Garry Bruce, Lura McCallum, Carol Newington, and George Nielsen.

Please think long and hard before supporting any of them. I believe it’s best not to let this pro-amalgamation, North Cowichan based group take over our government. Now is the time to stop them. They may have the biggest signs but that does not make them a good choice for us.
