Proposed tax increases not sustainable

Seniors’ quality of life taking a hit year after year

It is both alarming and disheartening to learn that North Cowichan council is even discussing a tax increase in the range of 4.4 per cent, now possibly to be reduced in the face of the Covid virus emergency.

For staff to describe the originally proposed increase as “sustainable” only shows how out of touch with their community they have become.

Most seniors’ pensions are limited to increases determined by the cost of living. What makes council think that chipping away at seniors’ quality of life year after year is morally “sustainable”?
